Afternoon Pheasant Hunting Preserve in Southeast Michigan

Pheasant hunting in Michigan is a popular outdoor activity that offers a chance for sportsmen to enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings while also testing their skills as hunters. One of the best times to go pheasant hunting in Michigan is in the afternoon, as the birds tend to be more active and easier to locate during this time of day.

Upland hunting, which includes pheasant hunting, is a type of hunting that typically takes place in the open, rather than in dense forests or wetlands. Pheasants, as well as other upland game birds such as quail and grouse, are typically found in fields and grasslands where they forage for food.

One of the key aspects of successful pheasant hunting is the use of bird dogs. These highly trained dogs are essential for finding and pointing out the location of pheasants, as well as retrieving the birds once they have been shot.

There are several different breeds of bird dogs that are commonly used for pheasant hunting, including pointers, setters, and retrievers. Pointers are known for their keen sense of smell and ability to locate pheasants by pointing their nose in the direction of the bird. Setters, on the other hand, use their eyesight to locate pheasants and then freeze in a "set" position to alert the hunter to the bird's presence. Retrievers are trained to retrieve the pheasant once it has been shot and bring it back to the hunter.

During an afternoon pheasant hunt in Michigan, the bird dogs will typically be released from the hunting vehicle or on command from the hunter. They will then start searching for pheasants, using their keen senses to locate the birds. Once a pheasant is located, the dog will "point" at the bird by standing perfectly still with its nose pointed in the direction of the pheasant. The hunter will then approach the bird and attempt to shoot it.

If the pheasant is successfully shot, the retriever will be sent to retrieve the bird and bring it back to the hunter. This is an important task, as it ensures that the pheasant is not lost or damaged in the field.

One of the benefits of pheasant hunting in the afternoon is that the birds are typically more active during this time of day. Pheasants are crepuscular, which means that they are most active at dawn and dusk. This makes it easier for hunters to locate and shoot the birds, as they are more likely to be out and about during the afternoon hours.

In addition to the excitement of the hunt itself, pheasant hunting in Michigan also offers the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the state. Michigan is home to a variety of landscapes, including forests, wetlands, and grasslands, all of which offer a unique and picturesque setting for a hunting trip.

Overall, afternoon pheasant hunting in Michigan is a thrilling and rewarding outdoor activity that combines the thrill of the hunt with the beauty of the natural surroundings. Whether you are an experienced hunter or a beginner, pheasant hunting in Michigan is an experience that is not to be missed.

Upland Bird Hunting in Michigan

Michigan has a rich history in upland bird hunting. The grouse woods and fields of wild pheasants have provided excellent upland hunting opportunities for generations. While habitat loss and predation has taken a toll on many of the areas in Michigan, there are still great opportunities available. Southeast Michigan upland hunting has suffered greatly over the past 40 years. However, Charlie Linblade has managed to develop and maintain one of the best upland hunting and dog training experiences in the state, just north of Ann Arbor. Wing Shooters is far more than sorghum strips in the middle of a manicured field, it's habit is designed and maintained to be as natural, and wild, as the best habitat for wildlife, with a strong focus on upland birds.
